DELAWARE COUNTY FIREMAN’S ASSOCIATION HONORS ROSE TREE FIRE COMPANY MEMBERS

 October 3, 2022

Three members of the Rose Tree Fire Company No. 1 were recognized and presented with awards at the 116th Anniversary Banquet of the Delaware County Fireman’s Association of the State of Pennsylvania, held at the Boothwyn Fire Company Banquet Hall on October 1, 2022.

Members Don Wilkins and Darryl Harris were presented with their Delaware County Fireman’s Association Life Membership Awards. Darryl was unable to attend the festivities. The Honorable Curt Weldon and Don’s wife Sue were on hand for the ceremonies.

The Robert R. Baxter, Jr. Firefighter of the Year Award is
presented to a member of the Delaware County Firemen’s
Association for outstanding or meritorious effort on behalf of the Fire Service. Any member in good standing of the Association is eligible to be nominated by any individual member or organization member in good standing for this award. The 2022 recipient is Deputy Chief Michael Cosgrove from the Rose Tree Fire Company No. 1.

Michael is a life member of the fire company with over 23 years of service to Rose Tree. He is always around the station helping to train members. In between drills and calls he can be found at the station assisting with a myriad of work needed to keep the equipment and station in working order. And all of this is to say nothing of the many contributions he makes on the administrative side of our operations. He exemplifies the commitment to service that has allowed the Rose Tree Fire Company to provide fire protection to our community for nearly 70 years. Mike’s wife Joanna and son Lt. Owen Cosgrove were present with Mike for this award.

PIO ZAPPASODI CONGRESSIONAL
FIRE SERVICE AWARD
This award is named after the late Pio Zappasodi a long-
time member of the Delaware County Firemen’s Association who represented the 8th District on the Executive Board. The
honorable Curt Weldon presents this award annually, to a person who has helped the fire service in Delaware County. The 2022 recipient is Donald K. Wilkins of Rose Tree Fire Company No. 1.

Don has been an active member of Rose Tree Fire Company for over 55 years and has held the positions of firefighter, Asst.
Engineer, Chief Engineer, and Chief. He is presently Asst.
Engineer and Historian. Don has also been a member of South
Media fire Company, and Middletown fire Company for over 25 years. Don also held the position of Captain at Westinghouse Fire Co. and Sterling imaging, and
emergency Coordinator for Johnson and Johnson. Don is also a life member of DCFA and has spent a lifetime serving his community. The Honorable Curt Weldon presented this award to Don after an exceptional discussion of how Delaware County has lead the national Fire Service throughout this entire nation. His wife Sue was proud to see Don receive this award.

Rose Tree Fire Company members in attendance to share in the celebration of these Honorees were Ken Medrow, William
Campbell, Abigail Henry, RJ Centrone, James Henry, Owen
Cosgrove, Mike Cosgrove, Don Wilkins, William MacCain, Jr.,
Christine Benedetto, Margaret King, Francesca D’Amico, and

For drill this week we continued our annual training with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

In teams of two, members went through an obstacle course including: forcing open both an inward and outward swinging door, conducting a search in black out conditions, raising and climbing ladders, working with tools, and advancing a hose line - all while wearing SCBA and monitoring air usage.

Come join the fun and learn more about the Rose Tree Fire Company at our station next or any Tuesday night at 7pm #RoseTreeFireCompany #volunteerfirefighter #SCBA #firetraining #wetalkingaboutpractice #delco

Do you still put wax paper in the masks to simulate smoke/limited vision?

For drill tonight Deputy Chief Cosgrove conducted the first of two classes for the crew conducting our annual Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) training.
The SCBA or “air packs” are used by the firefighters when they enter hazardous atmospheres like smoke filled buildings. Interested in joining or learning more stop by the station Tuesday nights at 7pm and meet the crew.

Last night, Firefighter Bill Campbell was recognized as Rose Tree Fire Company’s Firefighter of the Year for 2022 - an honor bestowed upon each year’s winner by vote of RTFC’s members.

Bill’s recognition is well earned and overdue. As a Life Member of RTFC, Bill has given more than 20 years of service to the fire company. Throughout that time he has been one of the crew’s most active and reliable members. In 2022 alone he answered more than 140 alarms. In between calls he is no less indispensable. Bill serves as Chairman of RTFC’s Trustees, and is responsible for the myriad of often thankless (but essential) tasks that keep our station running.

His commitment to public service has been a life long endeavor. Bill served for more than 30 years as a police officer in Upper Darby Police Department, and was a member of Highland Park Fire Company before moving to the Township and joining RTFC.

Please join us in congratulating Bill!
